Investigating Movements for Well-being

Concept

Physical movement directly influences our emotional energy and physical regulation states.

Focus Question

What are the best movements we can do to help our bodies feel good and regulated? How do different kinds of movement change the colour of our emotional zone?

Knowledge & Understanding Goals

Kindergarten Program (2016), Self-Regulation and Well-Being frame, Overall Expectation 6: effects of healthy, active living on the mind and body.
Kindergarten Program (2016), Overall Expectation 7: Participate actively and regularly in a variety of gross motor activities.

Thinking & Learning Skills

Thinking Skills (Metacognition): Monitoring and identifying changes in one's own internal state after an external intervention.
Learner Profile Connection (Balanced): Students understand that physical exercise and mindful movement are essential to personal balance.

Context

Having explored food scarcity and community organizations (Lessons 6-7), students return to actionable personal tools. Reminder: bring the four corner posters back out for the opening check-in.

Lesson Outline

Bring back the four corner posters and gather in an open floor space. Ask students to identify show which zone they feel closest to right now.

EXPERIMENTING WITH MOVEMENT

Students test three contrasting movement types, pausing after each to reflect.

1. High-Energy Burst (jumping jacks).

2. Slow & Grounding (tree poses, stretches).

3. Heavy Work/Release (pressing walls, rolling into a ball).

Students put a marker on a colour spectrum after an activity to show how the movement changed their state.

How did that movement make you feel?

Did it change how you feel in your body, brain or heart?

Are you closer to the green zone?

NAMING OUR BEST TOOLS

List which movements serve as the best tools for specific moments -- a wise choice moves body, brain, or heart toward the Green Zone.

Notes for Teaching and Evaluation

Three contrasting movement types let students discover how different movements get us closer or farther from different "zones"

The colour spectrum is a physical version of the same "make a shift visible" principle used elsewhere (Dashboard dial, Today/Future line).
